Here dwell some of the last dragons of Middle Earth. Deep in the heart of the mountains, these caves are almost unreachable except by flight. The main cave is a giant gaping hole in the mountain, large enough to accommodate a full-sized dragon. Surrounding caves connect and entertwine, creating a veritable catacomb of caves, passageways, and secret entrances. The main hole, situated halfway up the steep sides of a mountain, overlooks a small valley where a lake sits, filled from an underground spring. A rather scenic view, but travelers beware; dragons do not take kindly to trespassers!

Bamini landed on the jutting platform before the mouth of the cave and sniffed the air nervousely.

Moments later, Sentinel the silver dragon landed beside him, testing the air with a flick of his scarlet tongue. Then he boldy strode into the middle of the giant chamber, gazing around with metallic eyes. It seemed perfect; good hunting, adequate shelter, plenty of room. The cave was dry; no stagnant water lay in shallow pools here. A perfect cave for a dragon, this was. He decided to go exploring.
Kayla dismounted the golden dragon, gazing about her. This spot looked ideal for the dragons. Turning to Morwen, she said, "So, what do you think?"

"No access apart from the air, large and dry by the looks of things, isolated so good hunting, nearby water source. It seems perfect. What do you think Bamini?" she looked round, the golden dragon had gone. A few minits later a glittering snout appered though thee gloom "Can i have my own cave?" asked a rolling voice. Morwen shook her head in dispair and walked over to unhook the egg and her pack. She strode into the large cavern and then made her way into a small chamber. "If we light a great fire in here the heat will be contained and we can hatch your egg" Bamini trailed after her, repeating his question, till eventually he gave up and disappered, seemingly to find that special 'cave.'

Kayla nodded her head. "Well, I know nothing about hatching dragon eggs, so just tell me what to do," she said. There didn't seem to be many branches about; all the trees were below in the small valley. "Sentinel?" she called, "can you help us get a fire started?"
Sentinel was busy exploring, however, and decided not to hear her. Slipping his slender form through crevasses in the rock, he searched for 'his' cave. Finally, he found it. Large and roomy, he would take quite a while to grow out of this cave. He began to shift rocks from the center of the room to the sides, clearing a space for him to sleep.

A golden snout appered through a small hole high up on the wall, it was withdrawn and an amber eye appered. "Oooo nice cave, looks like i'm next door." a low chuckle filled the cavern as Bamini withdrew back to the main chamber. Like the petted dragon he was, he was thinking of only one thing. "Morie, did you bring my bed?" Morwen shook her head. "Bamini, this is not the palace, its a cave and i have a very very very small pack." "Come on, i know that pack" She sighed and opened it, plunging her hand in it reapperead dragging a huge cushion, the size of a small elephant out of it. "Its glarlfish skin, bigger on the inside. Don't ask me why a fish would want to be bigger on the inside but there you are. Bamini, you can't have this untill you feth us some fire wood from the vally." The dragon snarled but launched himself out of the cave.

Kayla chuckled at the amusing exhange; almost like watching a mother and her child. She did raise an eyebrow in surprise at the pack and its unusual contents. "A glarlfish?" she repeated, "Strange. I have not heard of that before." She looked at her own pack, battered, but still highly functional. She didn't know what it was made out of, but it held what she needed. Sentinel came out, satisfied with himself and the cave he had found. 'Where's Bamini?' he thought to Kayla. 'Gone for firewood,' she replied.

"No, you wouldn't have. Only found in the sea of Rhun, and can only be caught by those who have the knowledge, and it just so happens to be knowledge kept by the Temple. Bamini being a holy dragon dose have its advantages." Someone said my name? Bamini landed a huge tree trunk in his claws.

Kayla raised her eyebrows. "Sounds like quite a challenge," she remarked. Her hair ruffled around her face as the giant dragon landed, dropping an entire tree on the stone floor with an echoing thunk. Sentinel's eyes gleamed in admiration at the dragon's strength. "Well," said Kayla, beginning to strip off the smaller branches with her knife, "I guess I will start a fire for the egg, then. So, what exactly does it take to hatch a dragon egg? What's the incubation period?" Despite how close she and Sentinel were, she knew so little about dragons.

"Depends on the wind, the size of the egg, the type of egg, the size of the fire, the heat of fire, and the will of the Gods. In other words i have no idia." she laughed helping her and building up a small fire and adding larger and larger branches.

Finally a good-sized fire was blazing merrily in the open cave, casting elongated shadows on the stone walls. Sentinel curled up near the fire, basking in the warmth of the heated stone floor. Kayla looked at the red egg, pondering its contents. She hoped it would be a female; all they had now were males. "Sooooo" she said, "do we put it in the fire, or near the fire, or what?"

"In, Bamini, would you?" the dragon picked up the egg gently in his jaws and placde it in the center of the flames. "I would have asked you Sentinal, seeing as its your sibling and all but untill we know your type we can't let you in a fire that hot." she turned to Kayla. "One of us will need to keep feeding the fire all the time and keep it at this temperature or hotter."

"I'll do it," Kayla volunteered. Sentinel nodded his head in assent. As will I he growled. It was possibly his sibling, after all.

It had been almost a week since the small group had arrived. Kayla had stayed mainly in the entrance cave, feeding the fire, watching the scarlet egg. Sentinel joined in her vigil, only leaving to hunt and occasionally explore the catacombs throughout the mountain. It seemed like he had begun to grow more rapidly; he now measured about five feet long, his head almost at Kayla's shoulder. She figured it was from having steady meals of deer and other larger game. In Mirkwood, he mostly made do with rabbits, squirrels, and the occasional bird. She sighed, shifting her position, and threw another bundle of sticks on the bonfire. " How long will this take?" she said wearily, rubbing her eyes.

Morwen shrugged. "Cum'on get some sleep i'l take over for a few hours." she smiled weirly pushing a cusion towards her. Then spun round as she heard a crack and stared intently at the crimson egg. C-r-a-c-k. She let out a peirceing whistel, calling the dragons to her. "Ready?" she grinned

"No, I'm fi..." Kayla was cut off mid-sentence as the egg let out a loud crack. "Sentinel!" she called, "it's hatching!" The silvery dragons leaped out by the fire, watching intently. With another loud crack, a line appeared on the thick shell, then another one. The crimson surface soon was crisscrossed with dark lines. All four watched intently, two slitted eyes and two human ones. Then a section popped off. Through the wreathing flames, a wing appeared. The delicate bone lines were covered with wine-hued membranes, untouched by the flames. Then a tail appeared, snaking out of the open hole. With a loud pop. the egg was split from within by the dragon. A sinuous red body slowly uncurled, the wet membranous fluid quickly dissolved by the licking fire. A small, triangular head, covered in small red scales, gazed out at them. A dragon was born.
