25 000 None Warriors
20 000 Warriors
Population Gondor 8000
(4000 Non-Warriors, 4000 Warriors)
Guards of the Fountain Court: 100
The Citadel Guard and the Guard of the Fountain Court are selected from the very best of the warriors in all of Gondor, swearing to give their lives in the service of the lords of Minas Tirith and to be fearless in combat. They wear winged helmets made of mithril, intricately crafted heavy armour and carry the best weaponry that the armouries of the White City have to offer.
Minas Tirith Citadel Guard: 400
Founded as an order of elite guards answerable only to the king of the southern realm, the Citadel Guard are one of the earliest institutions of the Kingdom of Gondor. Only the best warriors that Gondor has to offer are picked to join the Guard, to be clad in their ancient armour and to carry blades of Westernesse, heavy with both age and honour. The guardsmen themselves are the very image of the first Men of Núménor to settle the shores of Middle-earth, tall and stern, proud and steady in battle. Though no king has been known in Gondor for many years, the guard still go about their duties, protecting the Stewards of Gondor and the sacred places of Minas Tirith with a resolute devotion. In the absence of a king, the guards take their orders from the Steward of Minas Tirith, sworn to obey his every command until death claims them.
Knights of Minas Tirith: 1500
Tall, stern warriors mounted on swift steeds and bearing keen lances, the Knights of Minas Tirith are truly the pride of Gondor. When the armies of Minas Tirith go to war, it is the Knights that lead every assault, riding enemy formations into ruin and driving the few survivors before them.
Warriors of Minas Tirith: 2000
The men of Minas Tirith have lived their whole lives under the shadow in the east, never faltering. It is through their valour that the lands beyond Gondor have been kept safe from Sauron's armies.
Population Arnor 10 000
(5000 Non-Warriors, 5000 Warriors)
Warriors of Arnor: 2000
All that remains of the once-proud armies of Arnor, these warriors are, by necessity, veterans of the wars with Angmar, though their spirit is all but broken. The Warriors of Arnor are a match for almost anything the Witch-king can muster against them.
Rangers of Arnor: 3000
The Rangers of Arnor are the woodsmen and hunters of the lands about Fornost, training to assume the responsibilities of the Rangers of the North and working in concert with the Dúnedain to keep the land free of fell creatures.
Population Ithilien 12 000
(5000 Non-Warriors, 7000 Warriors)
Rangers of Ithilien: 2000
The Rangers of Ithilien are hand-picked from the inhabitants of Ithilien for their skill at woodcraft and archery. In the waning years of the Third Age, the Rangers constitute the first line of defence against the hordes of Mordor, holding the crossings of the Anduin against the servants of Sauron.
Wood Elves: 3000
Almost all Wood Elves have been called to fight at some time or another, using their deadly skills with bow, spear, and blade in the defence of their homes. These Elvenkind do not wear armour, preferring instead to rely on stealth and manoeuvrability to win the day for them.
Wood Elves Sentinels: 2000
Wood Elves do not rely on walls and fortifications for their defence, instead striving to outmanoeuvre and overwhelm their foes piecemeal. Key to this strategy are the Sentinels – Elven warriors who wander the paths far from Elven settlements. Somewhat incongruously, many Sentinels carry lutes or pipes on their vigils. Yet, these instruments are key to their role, for the music of the Sentinels is interwoven with magical verse, each refrain crafted to either beguile, repel, or embolden depending on the need.
Population Belfalas 3000
(1500 Non-Warriors, 1500 Warriors)
Knights of Dol Amroth 600
The tall Swan Knights of Dol Amroth are the elite of Gondor, men fair and stern of aspect and peerless upon the field of battle. Truly they are a memory of days long ago lost. Some fight on foot, leading regiments of Men-at-Arms into the fray, but most Knights fight from horseback, their skilled hands guiding gleaming lances to pierce the heart of the enemy formation. Where the Swan Knights of Dol Amroth ride, hope is reborn and victory is torn from the darkness of defeat.
Men-At-Arms of Dol Amroth 400
Dol Amroth's defence rests not only upon the shoulders of her Knights, but also upon her Men-at-Arms, a force of standing soldiery sworn to the prince's service. Unlike the Swan Knights, these Men-at-Arms are of common birth, but are no less dedicated to the protection of Gondor and Dol Amroth. Armed with sturdy pikes and clad in plate armour, blocks of Men-at-Arms march in support of the Knights, forming a reliable core of warriors.
Clansmen of Lamedon 200
The Clansmen of Lamedon make their homes in the untamed foothills of the White Mountains. Undisciplined and preferring a wilder way of fighting, such folk may be unsuited to the ordered battlelines at the heart of Gondor's armies but they are formidable skirmishers, using their long blades to great effect.
Axemen of Lossarnach 300
The Men of Lossarnach are unusually armed, choosing to wield broad-bladed axes in place of the more commonplace spear and sword. This peculiarity holds its origins in the earliest days of Gondor, when the first lord of Lossarnach used such a weapon to great effect in the defence of his liege. Since that day, the sons of Lossarnach have wielded these.
Population Umbar 2000
(1000 Non-Warriors, 1000 Warriors)
Corsairs Arbalesters 500
The Corsairs of Umbar believe in having as much firepower as they can carry. To this end, many carry crossbows on raids and use a large wooden pavise to provide shelter as they reload. It is common for such Corsairs to gamble heavily, with numerous bets placed upon who shot how many enemies, and where. Being able to place a quarrel in an opponent's eye is generally considered a winning shot, although other areas of the body can score highly if the results are sufficiently entertaining.
Corsairs of Umbar 500
The Corsairs of Umbar are ruthless raiders possessed of a savagery more commonly associated with Orcs rather than Men. Fortunately for the seafaring folk of Middle-earth, Corsair attacks are generally as brief as they are vicious, for the renegades of Umbar have little stomach for prolonged battle on land and will gladly scramble back to their ships once they have stolen enough plunder.
Population Aglarond 7000
(2000 Non-Warriors, 5000 Warriors)
Vault Warden Teams 400
While many of the finest Dwarf warriors are picked to serve in the Khazâd Guard, others are selected for a different duty, albeit no less fraught with peril. They are the Vault Wardens, seasoned warriors who excel in warfare in cramped passageways and upon perilous walkways. Always fighting in pairs, these expert tunnel fighters make use of spears and great tower shields to push back their foes.
Iron Guard 600
The Iron Guard are grim and hardy Dwarf veterans, clad in heavy coats of chain mail. The role of the Iron Guard in the armies of the Dwarves is to defend the trade routes around the Dwarf holds, and their function has molded them into hardened warriors. By necessity, the Iron Guard are dour and aggressive, famed for devastating charges against enemies that grievously outnumber them, when they slaughter their foe with thrown axes and deadly sword-thrusts s proven his level head and strong arm in many a battle and there is no more dependable companion to be found. Proud and grim, Mardin will do whatever is required to protect his liege from danger.
Dwarf Warriors 2500
Dwarf Warriors are trained in their youth to fight, when they learn warfare under the watchful eyes of their kinsmen. In compact fighting units called kinbands, wise veterans impart expertise gained through grueling hardship and constant combat to the fledgling warriors. This training creates soldiers who are skilful and have a fighting spirit as strong as the chain mail that protects them.
Dwarf Rangers 1500
Dwarf Rangers patrol the lands around every Dwarf Hold, ensuring the safety of their homes from the Dark Lord's servants and wandering monsters. Trespassers are hunted down and swiftly neutralised with bows and axes. If the peril is great enough, the Rangers send back to their kin for reinforcements, tracking their quarry until they are able to strike in force.
Population Imladris 1300
(700 Non-Warriors, 500 Warriors)
High Elves Warriors: 500
The High Elves are the deadliest warriors in all of Middle-earth, combining skill at arms with expertly fashioned wargear. They are proficient with swords, spears and bows, and are the bravest of all fighting troops. High Elves worked together with the battle-hardened Men of Gondor in an earlier age. They fought back against the evil Sauron and his minions and wrested the Ring from the Dark Lord's control. Today the High Elves, though rarely seen, continue to protect the lands of Middle-earth from the ravages of Orcs, Goblins and other forces of Evil.
Population The Shire 700
(500 Non-Warriors, 300 Warriors)
Hobbit Militia: 100
The average Hobbit has literally no fighting ability whatsoever. These folk are peaceful and shun all adventure and dangerous living. Their peaceful nature should not be confused for inability to take up arms, however, for it is the combined strength of these good, peaceful folk which drives the bullies off at the Battle of Bywater.
Hobbit Shirriffs: 100
Within the bounds of the Shire there is little need for law keeping and stern discipline. However, the Shirefolk maintain a core of Shirriffs to protect themselves from strife both internal and external. Better trained, with some experience of fighting, the Shirriffs form the core of the Hobbits who rally to the call of Merry and Pippin when the Shire arises to throw off Sharkey's oppression.
Hobbit Archers: 100
Protecting the boundaries of the Shire at all times from invasion is a relatively small group of Hobbits Archers, known sometimes as the Bounders. Their sole responsibility is to protect the borders of the Shire from dangerous animals.
Population Fangorn 1000
(1000 Warriors)
Ents: 1000
Ents are giants that resemble nothing so much as trees, having lived for so many years in the forests and having become rather like the trees that they love. Ents care little for the world that is beyond the forest realm of Fangorn but the destruction of their beloved woodlands drives them into a raging fury of destruction.
