BACKGROUND[/i][/color]
Personality: Alatar is normally calm and placid, and also and forgiving but despite this he is evil. His thirst for power is unquenchable and because of this he will stop at nothing to get it, which sometimes counteracts his normal traits and reveals a nature opposite of that that everybody sees. In addition to this, if agrivated enough, Alatar will fly into an unstoppable rage, one that often ends very badly for all parties involved, as if he is provoked to fighitng while in this rage, Alatar will cast destructive spells in all directions, and although this is focused on his victim, it can easily hit anybody, even those on his side. Because of these main traits, Alatar's personality is very volatile and could change in a moment from calm and peaceful, to cruel and cunning, to angry and destructive.
Detailed History: A Maia chosen by Orome to travel to Middle-Earth to help the people there to oppose Sauron, Alatar agreed to go, but only if his friend, Pallando could also go. The Vala agreed and so the two set out for Middle-Earth, as did a few others of the Istari. Alatar and Pallando travelled out of Western Middle-Earth and into the East, to prevent Sauron from gaining followers there. Saruman also accompanied them at first, but soon returned to Western Middle-Earth. Sauron had already begun to corrupt the hearts of the men there and it took a great deal of effort for the two Wizards to turn them back from evil. However, after gaining the trust of the Easterlings, the Wizards had great success, so much that Sauron sent one of his greatest servents after them, a Balrog.
The Balrog caught up with Alatar and Pallando on one of the many open plains in the Western part of Rhun and the battle that ensued was a huge and ferocious one, lasting for several days, but the Wizards maintained the upper hand. However, whilst fighting, the Balrog was not trying to defeat them - their location was not advantageous to him, and instead he was slowly falling back, towards an uninhabited mountain range. The Balrog drew them into a cavern and once they were inside, the Balrog destroyed the entrance and the Blue Wizards realized they had been lured, but it was now impossible to back out. The Balrog fled further into the mountains, before finally attacking at a crossroads and bringing down the roof, separating the two Wizards and leaving Alatar alone to fight the Balrog while Pallando tried to find a way around. The battle continued, the Balrog slowly showing greater strength and ability, until finally Alatar was knocked to the ground and his sword was smashed out of his hand. As the Balrog raised it's sword for a final blow, Alatar leaped up, slamming the point of his staff hard into the Balrog's upper neck, causing it to roar in pain, but under the roar, Alatar said some inaudible words and a huge fireball was conjured from the point of the staff, exploding between the staff and the Balrog's neck. The beast may be mainly made of fire, but a man is mainly made of water and if hit by a large amount of that, they will also die.
The Balrog screamed in pain, lashing out with his whip and sword, crumbling the walls and ceiling of the cavern, and it was sheer luck - and a lot of it - that allowed Alatar to escape. Now badly injured, separated from Pallando and with no sword or staff (it was lost while he was escaping the cave-in) and thus also without any way to heal himself well enough (his magic without his staff could do something, but not much - the Balrog's attacks had been too strong), Alatar slowly made his way to the nearest settlement he knew about. There he was taken in and healed a little by the people, but it would take time for him to be healed completely and he used this time to travel to Gondor, where he temporarily took up residence, constantly reading from the library, learning more and more about the Rings, Middle-Earth, Balrogs, Morgoth and the Palatiri, although he knew more about Balrogs and Morgoth than most of the records he read, he wanted to find out why and how the Balrog had been able to take on two other Maia on almost equal footing.
Alatar learned most about the Palantiri for whilst in Gondor, he had become friends with the Steward, Denethor, who allowed him to look at the secret records of Gondor that were never revealed to the public, including those on the Palantiri. After a great deal of research on the Palantiri, Denethor allowed him to look into the Arnor-stone and there he saw Sauron, whom he spoke to, and later Saruman, whom he also spoke with. Alatar became more and more obsessed with the Palantir, which also drove Denethor to look in it more often, and eventually Alatar joined Sauron and left Gondor for Rhun, to do exactly the opposite of his original intentions.
Alatar had much more success converting the people to evil than he did turning them good, and soon he became the most trusted advisor to the ruler of Rhun. Alatar helped Sauron persuade the people of Rhun to go to battle alongside Sauron's forces, and when they were defeated, Alatar manipulated their minds to hate Western Middle-Earth before deciding to only be a part-time advisor to the ruler and instead he wandered Middle-Earth, looking for another great evil power to work with to conquer Middle-Earth - he was easily wise enough to know that he could not do it alone. Soon he succeeded, finding Khamûl, the leader of the Nazgûl after the death of the Witch-King, and Canos, a man with great power, apparently obtained from communicating with Morgoth through the Ithil-stone, which was a claim Alatar could believe - he had studied the Palantiri extensively and believed such a thing was possible, and this man's power was certainly not that of a normal man. Alatar also found several powerful evil beings, such as a fellow Maia, some more of the Nazgûl and another Balrog. Alatar then discovered several evil-natured rulers who, although not as powerful by themselves as the others Alatar had met, had strong armies that could definitely be useful. Alatar made agreements with Khamûl before leaving to check on Rhun again. Shortly after checking back on Rhun, Alatar left the East again to speak with Canos and, after discovering him to be up North, Alatar headed back towards Angmar, where he could meet Canos and Gorthog, one of the rulers.
Fears: Death, Good Istari.
Strengths: Great knowledge of the Palantiri, the Rings and Morgoth and his servents. Powerful destructive magic.
Weaknesses: Weaker at any other magic. Power-hungry.
Likes: Power, water, knowledge.
Dislikes: Good Istari (the fools who don't understand how powerful they could be if they wanted )
APPEARANCE
Facial Appearance: Dark blue eyes, a long black beard with streaks of a light grey, long black hair, also with streaks of light grey and elderly features.
Clothing: Long black robes with a gold lining.
Build: Medium-light, appears elderly although this does not affect his physical abilities in any way.
Marks/Scars: Several burn scars from his battle with the Balrog, for while most wounds would not leave a scar on him, the Balrog's attacks can.
Role play Sample: Khamûl stepped out of the dungeons of Carn Dûm, an orc clad in bloodied rags wiping blood from his spiked gauntlets. Torture was a tiring process, and the Gondorian was a tough one; he still hadn't given in to it despite being affected so badly by Khamûl's Black Breath that he had fallen unconcious within three minutes of exposure to it. Although he might have been able to answer the questions if he had not been screaming in terror so much. However, it had been an enjoyable experience, and one he would like to do again. Soon. But not with that Gondorian, next time it would be an Orc to torture him, one of the more intelligent ones that hopefully wouldn't get over-enthusiastic and kill the man. Although exposure to the Black Breath for much longer could have done that to the pathetic soul, that was the reason Khamûl would not go in again; he needed the information from that man. For starters, waht was he doing so far up North, and then why was he snooping in Angmar? Was King Aragorn beginning to get suspicious? Khamûl decided he would send a diplomat to the Reunited Kingdom soon, to establish friendly relations, however fake and temporary they would be.
Khamûl's head instinctively darted to the right as he heard a Nazgûl's screech, from the border. Khamûl looked for the exact location of the Nazgûl in question before let out his own, deafening screech in reply and hurrying out of the dungeon to the home of his steed. So there was a small force of armoured cavalrymen invading, and they were easily cutting through the orcs. Likely they were knights of Gondor, and this Gondorian was their scout. Well, somehow they must have found out the truth and if that was so, he would have to forget diplomacy and secrecy and meet them in battle himself. If his orcs were losing as badly as he had heard, these were no ordinary troops. They were possibly even the King's guard... Khamûl smiled an invisible smile as this thought crossed his mind, almost doubling his speed as he imagined cutting down Aragorn, the King of the Reunited Kingdoms.
The Nazgûl flew swiftly on his steed, approaching the battle scene and giving his second screech, ordering the orcs to stop fighting and back away. The ringwraith, clothed in loose black robes slowly flew down to land the huge black Drake on the ground between the Angmar orcs and the enemy men. His hoarse but loud whisper of a voice sounded out across the battlefield, "You do not look like the men of Gondor I thought you were. Tell me, where are you from and why are you here and, depending on your answer, maybe I'll consider letting you meet my master. Or maybe I'll just kill you all right here? Speak, men. I am no longer patient enough for the likes of you."
Other: Yeah, 'tis me - Khamûl. This was going to be my original character, hence my Khamûl-account username but I changed my mind... Meh... XD
