Haldir rode in a familiar fashion through a familiar path to a familiar Imladris. He had been away for almost 5 years on a lengthly errand abroad and riding throughout Middle-earth with a group of messenger Elves to force and to secure alliances with other races and lands. Their little-known work was still incomplete, but another Elf was sent to take Haldir's stead so that he could return home to perform his other duties. This day, he was looking forward to being reunited with his daughter Itarildë, who would now be reaching womanhood, and the Lady Alatáriël, who was the closest he had ever had to an older sister despite her higher status.
Haldir could hear the waterfall straight ahead and knew that he was finally home. Word had been sent to Alatáriël already to inform her of his return, but Haldir did not know if she had received the message or if she had yet informed Itarildë, if she had received the message. His heart pounded in anticipation as he dismounted, pleased to see some familiar faces already.
"Where are you my daughter?" he muttered to himself. He knew that if he could find Alatáriël, Itarildë would not be far from her; he had entrusted his daughter to only her for the duration of his absence because he and Itarildë trusted her the most.

As soon as word arrived that the Steward, Haldir, had returned to Imladris, Itarildë quickly leaped from her chair and ran out the door and headed outside, leaving Alatáriël to follow right behind her. She knew that there was joy in Itarildë's heart hearing that her father had finally returned home. She had finally gotten use to the fact that Haldir had to go away often and she no longer cried for her ada to come home, nor did she need Alatáriël at her side to make sure she went to sleep at night.
But Itarildë was no longer a tiny Elfling, for she had grown and Alatáriël wondered what Haldir's reaction would be, seeing that his little girl was growing up.
She smiled and watched as Itarildë took off running towards Haldir the moment she saw him coming up the pathway and the elleth followed. That, Alatáriël was sure she would probably not grow out of. "Welcome home, my friend," Alatáriël greeted. She knew he was glad to be home, she could see it in his face.

Haldir could see Itarildë running in his direction already from afar before she could scream his name, and Alatáriël following quickly behind her. As she ran to him, he swooped her up from the ground and looked at his daughter with great fondness. "How I have missed you, my dear Itarildë!" he said with a slightly mournful tone. "You have grown so since I last looked upon you!"
He turned to Alatáriël and bowed to her - rather clumsily, because he was still clutching Itarildë - and put a hand on her shoulder. "It has been long, my lady," he said with a smile. "You have cared for my daughter well and I thank you. I have missed your company also. The journey was tiring and I am glad to return. How did the garrison hold during my absence?"

Alatáriël laughed lightly. "I walk and you run, Itarildë. That is why it looks like I am slow."
She watched the happy reunion between Itarildë and Haldir. Although happy, she still could tell by the sound of Haldir's voice that it pained him a little knowing that his daughter had done much growing without him. It pained any parent who had to be separated from their child for a time. Itarildë was no longer a child, but she was still not yet fully grown.
Alatáriël smiled and rested a hand upon Haldir's shoulder, returning the greeting. "Indeed it has," she said. "And there is no need to thank me, my friend, it is the least I can do. It has held well and no incidents to report."

Alatáriël, once again, laughed. Itarildë still had that child like nature. But over the years, she had a become a little more wild and seemed to like getting into mischief. "Well then, Itarildë," Alatáriël said. "You are going to be even more bored by our chattering because your Ada and I have much matters to speak of. Perhaps you'd rather play somewhere while we talk?"

Haldir chuckled and set Itarildë down. "Alatáriël and I must discuss important and serious matters, my elfling," he said gently. "You are welcome to listen though, now that you are growing up and should learn of happenings outside of your comforts in Imladris."
He gestured politely to Alatáriël to walk before him as a sign of respect.
"It has been unusually quiet," he observed to her, thinking back on the little difficulty he had on the road during his journey abroad, and on what Alatáriël had told him about nothing to report. "Few attacks have been reported of late and the dark forces have been peaceful, if such a thing exists for them. Do you think this means anything?"

Alatáriël had other matters to speak to Haldir about that had involved his daughter. She decided to hold those discussions until later when Itarildë was not around, leaving them to speak privately.
"Imladris has been peaceful and under no threat of attack but I am sad to report that more of our kin have left the realm," Alatáriël said. "The dark forces are not capable of peace, my friend. If they have become quiet after a brief attack or two, then they must be plotting one much greater." She went silent of a moment then continued speaking, "Something brews in the north, in Angmar. It seems that the Nazgûl have approached King Éomer, claiming to want to negotiate positive relations, but those creatures do not negotiate. The Rohirrim have marched to Angmar, my husband has gone with them. I fear it will go ill."
