Cristin followed her, watching her every motion to make sure she didn’t do anything he couldn’t and make sure he wouldn’t have a problem following her. He watched her as she ran up the tree and jumped through the thicket. See, now why had he not thought of that? Of course the thicket would be less dense the higher it went. He shook his head and smiled and then did the same thing that she had done, running up the tree with the same grace she had. He was an elf after all and there were things that he could. However, when he reached the top he knew that the nook was not big enough for him to go through. Well, it was too late for that now. He couldn’t stop his momentum. Kayla didn’t want him tearing up the forest, but it seemed that was going to happen now as he body broke straight through the thicket, crashing right through the thorns and toppling onto the ground, not really rolling, just plopping. He let out a moan in anguish and shook his head, pulling himself up…

She met his eyes as he looked up, the gold around her pupils sparkling with mirth. "Wonderful. Very graceful landing, sir elf." Turning around, she strode up to the door of the cottage. Pulling out a small golden key, she inserted the intricate design into the hole. In a series of turns known only to herself, she unlocked it and stepped inside. Looking around for Sentinel, she failed to locate him. 'Where are you?' she thought inquisitively.
'On the roof,' he replied, 'watching this Cristin. He seems rather winded. Spectacular entry, though. Tore up the canopy a bit, but it will soon grow back. He seems a mite dazed.' Laying lazily on the roof, he nestled into the thatch, only the top of his silvery head showing. This stranger was turning out rather interesting after all.
She chuckled. Well, she didn't know about Cristin, but she herself was starving. Rummaging around in her stores of food, she soon located the ingredients she needed. Plucking a large iron pot off the wall where it hung with its bretheren, she stoked up the fire and began throwing things halfhadzardly into the depths of the pot, sometimes whole, sometimes chopping them into pieces with her knife. She listened carefully, waiting to see if he would come in or not.

Cristin looked around and took in his surroundings. It was rather fascinating. She lived in a thicket, like a deer and had a rather pleasant home. It was quiet, secluded and she probably has never had any visitors except for now. Cristin had a lot of times wished for such a life, but the things of his unknown past prohibited such action and lifestyle. No the less, Cristin still admired her life. Cristin looked at the roof and saw the silver creature again, still, because of the darkness could not make it out, even with his elven eyes. He sighed and shook his head, walking into the door, following Kayla, “ So is your pet just going to watch me the whole time or is he going to show himself?” Cristin asked calmly and looked back at the door, half expecting the creature to be there. He wasn’t. He turned back to Kayla. “ Remember, I showed you mine and like you noted before, I don’t like the unknown.” He said calmly.

She lifted the now-full pot off of her table. The firelight glinted off the table's strange metallic surface. Putting the pot over the fire, she placed the lid on and faced him. "Well," she said cooly, "I suppose that's rather up to him, now isn't it? But I will ask." Raising her eyes to the roof, she called, "Hey, he doesn't like mystery or intruige, so if you would be so kind, you can come down now!"
He snorted, hot air streaming from his small nostrils. People just didn't appreciate mystery like they used to. Oh well. He would make a grand entry, then. Jumping from the roof, he flared his wings and swooping in through the door, landing on the hard tabletop.
Looking the elf directly in the eyes, Sentinel folded his gossamer wings against his lean, muscular body. From the tip of his slender tail to his blunt nose, he was every inch a dragon, all three feet of him. His small scales gleamed silver in the firelight, throwing iridescent sparkles on the wooden walls. Puffing out his heavily scaled chest, he arched his sinuous neck proudly. Well, he hoped the stranger was satisfied.

Cristin sighed and leaned against one of the walls to her house. He heard flapping wings and his eyes looked up at the ceiling. Then, a shot of silver flew down and landed on the table and there before him stood a dragon, not full grown, a baby probably, but a dragon none the less. Cristin smiled as he looked at it and then leaned his head a bit so he could see Kayla, “ No offense, but I have a dog bigger than that.” Cristin said and then looked back at Sentinel. “ So, you are the mysterious silver rider. Hmm, saw you a couple times today, didn’t know what you were until now. So, do you protect her from mean bad people like me?” Cristin asked in an inquisitive tone.

He snarled, revealing needle-like teeth. Then, he turned his back on the arrogant stranger. She needed no real protecting. As Kayla passed by the table, he leaped up on her shoulder, his prehensile tail curling loosely around her neck.
She felt the cool weight rest on her shoulder as Sentinel landed. Reaching her hand up, she touched him on the tip of the nose, admonishing him. "Be nice." Turning to Cristin, she warned him, "He may not be big now, but it is never a good idea to get on the bad side of a dragon. For when he grows, you will not find it so amusing to mock him. Besides," she said, "he is only about a decade old, after all."

Cristin nodded his head, " Aye, you will grow large i suppose." Cristin said and looked over at Kayla, " Interesting choice of a companion, most females find a man." He said and smiled, " Of course, you are probably smarter than most men aren't you?" he asked, looking at Sentinel. " Oh well." He laughed. He looked outside and ip at the sky. There were some rather dark clouds forming overhead and they blocked out the moonlight. He shook his head. He didn't like dark nights. He enjoyed the moon's light more than the sun's. He turned and looked back at Kayla. " So, if i am to stay here, where is it that you prefer i sleep." Cristin asked. He looked at the ground and around the home.

Sentinel moved his wings around, deciding that the elf was not so bad as he first seemed. 'Tell him that of course I am smarter than a man. I am a dragon, after all.'
She grinned to herself as she recieved his thought. Sentinel was a better companion than most people found nowadays. Turning to Cristin, she said, "Well, I did not exactly choose him, persay. It was more of a mutual decision. But yes, he is a very good companion. I don't know what I'll do when he gets too large for the house. After all, dragons never stop growing, so the longer he lives, the larger he gets. Eat me out of house and home, he will," she said playfully, tickling the dragon under his chin. "But as to your question, this house is much larger than it looks. Here, I'll show you." Walking to the back of the house, she pulled aside a thick wall hanging, revealing an arched tunnel in the stone. "You see," she explained, "I did not discover this until Sentinel became my companion. Dragons are amazing at finding caves and jewels, after all. Over the years, I widened the natural cracks in the stone." Turning to the first entry on the right, she pushed in a heavy wooden door, reavealing a small, rather unfurnished room. A few nooks in the wall held candles, which she promtly lit. The flickering light revealed a bed in the corner with a small nightstand beside it. Showing Cristin in, she said, "Well, it isn't much, but it is better than sleeping in Mirkwood. And I have a feeling you cannot be pursued here," she said.

Cristin followed Kayla through the secret tunnel. He watched her as she moved, noting that was graceful and had the gift of the elves to thank for that. Obviously she had inherited that part from them. He wondered how good her hearing and eyes were? Her ears had the appearance of elven ears, but that didn’t mean that could as well. He eyes, well they were just gorgeous, and so he couldn’t much farther in though than that. He looked at the room that she had presented to him. It wasn’t bad; he had slept in much worse, much worse. He nodded his head in approval. He turned his head and when she said he would be safe. “ Well, I wish this was safe, but no where, no wall will my pursuers. Magical barriers only slow them.” Cristin said calmly, looking down. That probably wasn’t a welcoming though to his host. He looked back up, changing the subject, “ And where will you be sleeping? And your pet?” He asked kindly. He didn’t want to seem rude or anything, but he was just curious.

She glanced at him, surprised at his boldness. "Well, Sentinel prefers to sleep by the fire, mostly for warmth. I sleep in my room, obviously." Kayla decided that was as much as he needed to know. Her affairs were her own concern. This is precisely the reason I keep to myself she thought. Oh well. Curiosity was common among the races. Few enjoyed the unknown. Turning back to him, she stated, "Now that you have asked me a few questions, I have one for you. What exactly are these creatures, beings, or whatever you want to call them?"

Cristin sighed when she asked him about the things that were attacking him. It was not a question that could be so simply answered. Cristin looked around and walked over to the bed that was up against the wall. He sat down on it and it squeaked a bit as he did. He winced as he sat down as a sharp pain seared through his body. He looked down at his legs where the pain originated. He put his left arm underneath his thigh and looked pulled it back. It had blood on it. He shook his head as he looked at the rest of his legs, which were pretty torn up, probably due to the thorns he had just jumped through.
“ Anyway, these creatures, they are somewhat like wraiths I suppose. I can’t see them, or only in short visions I guess when they are in close proximity. They are something that has always come out. I can’t really explain them, so I am not going to try. I don’t know where they came from, so I can’t tell you that.” Cristin shook his head.

Noticing the rust colored stains beginning to form on the bed, Kayla sighed. "Well, looks like you sustained a bit of an injury there. Best get that taken care of. After all, those scratches can get nasty infections. I received my fair share of thorns before I perfected getting here." Turning away, she crossed the hall into a small room a little to the left of the bedroom. Rummaging around, she came up with a small bottle of salve and some bandages. Coming back into the room, she tossed the items at him. "Here, catch."
Senitnel snickered to himself. Relaying his thoughts to her, he said, 'Ha! So the almighty warrior is not so invincible as he would seem. I may be small, but I at least don't have soft skin that is so easily punctured. I haven't cut myself once since we've been here!" he boasted.
Forgetting herself, she replied to him out loud. "Well, you also can fly. And you are covered in scales. Few beings can boast that, so be nice, Sentinel!"

Cristin wondered what the dragon had said to have Kayla say what she did. He didn't pay much heed to it as he was tending to his leg. It was a bit awkward for him because the wound was in such an odd place. He got it eventually and then returned his gaze to Kayla, " Thank you," He said and smiled before laying down on the bed. " I do thank you for you hospitality." Crisitn said with another smile. " I hope you sleep, and your dragon too." Cristin said and rest his head on one of the pillows, his leg a bit extended into the air.

She smirked slightly, seeing his clumsiness at bandaging himself. If he thought she was going to help him, than he was dead wrong. He was fortunate enough to get a room from her. Inclining her head slightly, she replied, "You are welcome, sir Cristin. I hope you sleep well too." She turned to leave, Sentinel on her shoulder. Then, almost as an afterthought, she looked at him again. "Whatever you hear during the night, stay in your room," she commanded. It was not a request, but rather an order. With one graceful movement, she shut the door and left.
Sentinel curled up next to the flickering flames of the fire. He watched the coals with half-closed eyes, following the almost lifelike movements of the flame inside. He wondered about the stranger. Why did she let him in? There was something rather peculiar about him, but Sentinel could not place a talon on it. With these puzzlements in his mind, he slowly drifted off into dragonish dreams of flight and fire.
Looking around her windowless room at the end of the hall, she shut the thick stone door behind her. She had always liked simplicity, and her room reflected this. The few furnishings that existed were simple in design, made of wood and cut with straight, even lines. Changing into a sleeveless tunic and loose pants, she sat on the edge of the bed, chasing away sleep. She thought about everything she could, from the stranger in her house to the memories of her travels. Maybe it was time for another journey. She had not been on one in over a decade. Perhaps getting away would stop the nightmares......with that last thought, she succumbed to the fog that surrounded her and fell asleep.

Cristin slept soundly. But he awoke about an hour before dawn. His body was used to doing this. He did not like be caught sleeping a dawn. They always were they waiting for their chance to catch him. Cristin pulled himself up off the bed. He looked down at his leg and sighed. He stood up slowly, the wound not causing him any trouble as he walked over to the door. He opened it. Thankfully it didn’t squeak. Cristin looked out and down the hall. There was nothing. Cristin went back into his room and took his sword, latching it to his belt. He then walked out of the room and down the hall. He went towards the door, but heard Sentinel. He stopped and looked at the dragon. He sighed, clever little thing. Cristin was an elf though, he was silent as he opened the door and slipped outside and was gone.
