Legolas felt himself blushing with chagrin as if he were an elfling again, not over two thousand years old. How crass could one be. Of course this great, once High King of the Noldor must have re-lived and re-fought that battle in his mind ever since he was slain? How could he want to constantly remember it. ' Forgive me, ' he said, ' But you are one of our greatest hero's. '

Fingolfin merely gave a faint breath of a laugh, ' Thranduilion, I was mad, as mad as my brother was when he took the oath, burned the ships and stranded us, and marched on Dor Daedeloth - but I would do it again, ' he said, and the silver-blue blaze of his eyes showed clearly for a moment. Then he closed his mouth as if no more could be drawn from him.

Legolas bowed, '' Hir nin, I beg pardon, '' he murmured, for he could sense the pain there, and the ancient horror.

'' There is no need, '' Fingolfin looked curiously remote in the silver light, as though he had indeed stepped into this Age for long ago, limned in light and power. Then he smiled, and with the smile , white and dazzling, his face changed, to become more approachable. '' My sons also asked me, when I was re-united with them. It is simply not something I wish to always recall - I fought, in grief and madness and rage, and wounded him, and died, would you know of the pain then? And the realisation I could not win? ''

Legolas shook his head, ' No - no my lord, Glorfindel showed me, really showed me, the Fall of Gondolin, in my mind, and his death - I was there, somehow, so long ago, smelled it, felt it, tasted the grief and horror - I am not certain I could see that , through you, ... Morgoth, ' He must have been an adored King, thought Legolas, and even so long later, his magnificence, his aura , had not faded. It was almost unfair that the Elven males were so much more beautiful than the women. The Rohirrim woman , Anwyn was the only woman he had seen for a long time out of the ordinary.

'' Ah, yes, I see, that can be done, by those born in Aman, '' Fingolfin nodded. '' Come let us go in, I wish to speak with Nodonn, but it wil have to wait, - and whatever is out there, that can wait on our pleasure also, young prince, ''

Legolas laughed softly as they walked back to the encampment, '' I am not so very young, my lord - although to you I must be but an elfling, and one not even of your kindred. ''
